Joint conference with concern „Achema Group“
On Achema group initiative and in their premises, a conference, the subject of which was “Peat production, processing and use” took place on 21st September, 2011. Peat companies’ association members, peat companies’ managers and owners, Achema group representatives, geology service representative took part in the conference.

Baltic countries peat producers’ forum 2011
Eleventh Baltic countries peat producers’ forum took place in Riga, Latvia on 14th – 16th September, 2011.
The subject of the forum was: restoration means and methods of exploited peat-bogs.

Norbert Siebels Chairman of EPAGMA
Norbert Siebels, managing director of Klasmann-Deilmann GmbH, has been elected Chairman of the "European Peat and Growing Media Association" (EPAGMA). The Brussels-based association wich represents the interest of the European peat and growing media industry elected Dr. Siebels as successor to Matti Hille, chairman of the board of the Finnish company Vapo Oy.

Association “Lithuanian peat” reporting – electoral meeting
Peat enterprises’ association “Lithuanian peat” reporting – electoral meeting took place on the 18th of March, 2011.
At the start of the meeting, executive director Juozas Daukantas introduced association activity and financial performance results of 2010. He presented the estimate of intended expenses for 2011. Association members were introduced with financial activity audit act of JSC “Laveksa” senior accountant Zita Liaudenskienė.

Association in the end of 2010 inducted two new members: Lematec UAB and well-established, more then 80 years in the market comapany from Holland - Slootweg machinefabriek which is worldwide supplier of complete computer-controlled mixing and screening equipment, crushers, mills and packaging systems.

2010 Rеkyva monitoring program
AB „Rėkyva“ is the first company to invest 300 000 LTL in peat bog monitoring program to be implemented in 2010-2020. Such environmental monitoring will be carried out for the first time in Lithuania. Although independent experts have decided that peat bog activities do not affect Rėkyva lake, the monitoring program will still be implemented.

Several important events were carried out by the Association “Lietuviškos durpės“ in 2010.
General Meeting of the Association members was held in the beginning of March. Due to economic crisis, two companies left the Association in the beginning of the year therefore association did not received planned revenue and in the beginning of the year association started with extra activities when preparing for organization of a traditional Baltic Peat Forum.
The Association had 13 members in 2010.

The 10th Baltic Peat Producers Forum was held on 2-4 September 2010 in Druskininkai, under the subject “Alternative Usage of Peat”.

Interesting facts
- Activated coal is produced from dark decomposed peat, which is used for filtering liquids, gases and precious metals from pollutants, i.e. in food, drinking water and medicine industry.
- Our ancestors would give a piece of charcoal to eat, especially for children intoxicated by food, since even back then they noticed that coal mitigates the consequences of intoxication.
- From old times, peat was used for fuel in Lithuania. Records reveal that even in the beginning of the 19th century peat was extracted and used for fuel in the places where forests were sparse.
